SOMME STREET

Somme Street will operate four rooms; infants (0-18months approx.), toddlers (18months-3years) and two preschool rooms (3-5years)

Kea’s and Tui’s

The Kea’s will have 8 children in their room and the Tui’s will have 12 children.
The kea’s and tui’s will actively use a primary care giving system and aspects of the RIE/Pikler philosophy.
The RIE/Pikler philosophy supports –

- Freedom for Movement – we do not use highchairs, we lap feed and once children are able to sit independently they sit at the table with their peers.

- Respectful interactions – this involves inviting children to be active participants int heir care and education.

Our environment will support uninterrupted play, so that children have time to make discoveries, explore and begin understanding how the world around them works and their role in this world.

Kiwi Rooms

The kiwi rooms will be fluid and although your child will have a dedicated room they will be able to share in learning experiences from both rooms. There will be a transition to school programme in place. We believe that transitioning to primary school is such a significant event in your child’s life we need to ensure that they are ready and prepared well for this. We strive to do this by providing children with the tools to become confident learners including, self-confidence, social skills, and enthusiasm for learning. A great deal of what we do is through play. Play is a powerful medium – when learning is fun and children are more inclined to participate. When children participate fully they are learning engagement and persistence.
